I think that might be a case of never having suffered what we used to have real scratch start

I've used a lot of real scratch start kent. Dedicated mma units with a torch. It's how I learned to Tig.

That's probably it. I haven't used a modern stick set to live Tig. Done it off a few old ens and off dedicated Tig sets.
My confusion as I only know live Tig as scratch and contact ignition Tig as lift.

I had to be told the other week what a rats tail was.
Apparently I was daft not to know what that was. I was getting ready to call pest control.

Ok the reverse then. Go try a few decent lift live torch sets. Not the buddy it's just not right for it! The Lorch I use now is really nice

Lift TIG was pants on early EWMs but it's been sorted for years.

On my Tetrix you can turn the HF off and use it as Lift Arc , touch the tungsten down on the work piece press the trigger and rock the tungsten away from the workpiece and away you go , not tried it and why would you when the HF works so well ?

working in areas where HF would damage electronic gear...we had a small lift arc tig for use in one of the tech rooms where iw as an apprentice as they found using the HF messed with certain bits of gear

Yes your Ewm works in the same way as my Rehm.
Still offers all the slopes and gas stages but needs a contact to generate the arc and isn't live until the switch is closed.

Because hf isn't allowed in some places and can.play havoc with some electronics

It's simple to use but very much a box full of tricks. I really love it tbh. Seriously excellent kit.
