What are my chances of welding this?

Cast iron is totally unsuitable for an exhaust manifold, try hitting one with a hammer. Then try the something with something that is cast iron........

Spark test works better and just watch the little red sparks come off proving that it is cast iron. Just a bit while I fill my handbag with bolts

I have written this on several posts but it never seems to sink in. Cast iron flows like water into the mould. If you want added strength, go for spheroidal graphite or "maleable cast" both of which are heat treatments of CI. Cast steel flows like treacle, so you can't use it for anything complex, it would ruin a complex sand mould as it flows in and is liable to cool before it hits the far corners. Foundries hate casting steel that is why 90% + of cast ferrous is cast iron.

Never come across a cast steel exhaust manifold. Had plenty break and they are clearly cast iron.

The manifold was made back in 1947 so it could be possible they made it from anything they had to hand just after the War ?

Having never welded cast iron, what are my chances of managing to stick this with any success lads?

I doubt my SIP 140 mig is man enough but I have a Topweld 180 Arc welder and rods from 2mm to about 5mm.

I’ve drilled a hole at the end of the crack andI’ve been using it with a couple of braces as Clarkes have a waiting time of 8months.

Pretty sure the exhaust manifolds on my Cologne V6 were cast iron. One had cracked and I mig'ed it in-situ, lasted well enough to not fail an MOT.
