What are my chances of welding this?

Having never welded cast iron, what are my chances of managing to stick this with any success lads?

I doubt my SIP 140 mig is man enough but I have a Topweld 180 Arc welder and rods from 2mm to about 5mm.

I’ve drilled a hole at the end of the crack andI’ve been using it with a couple of braces as Clarkes have a waiting time of 8months.

I had a Keetona folder with a broke lug. I asked the local college welding tutor for advice and he told me to bring it in and they used it as a demo to the students on how to repair a large casting

Unfortunately I’ve only got a Bullfinch torch and I don’t think that would be hot enough.
There is a carbon arc torch with the Topweld.
I have a little vice to repair, so I might have a practice on that.

It may have some residual stress that has caused the crack, if so it may be better to put 3 or 4 short runs that don't join up, work from the closed end of the crack and finish at the open end, its one of those jobs that you wont know until you try it, some will weld some wont, Supercast nickel electrodes would be my choice, they are reasonably ductile and will allow a bit of movement. keep it cool, ie weld a bit and allow it to cool then weld a bit more.
If it cracks again you might consider a mechanical repair such as bolting a plate over it.

I migged an exhaust manifold that the local specialist said could not be done. Just a number of quick short (1-2cms) tacks letting it cool down between goes. Never failed over the 4 years I had the car. Just lucky I guess.

BUt the rest of the car rusted away.


I have Brazed up drill bases, vices and G clamp frames.
Ok the G clamps were not 100% as they warped.

I hac=ve stick welded Manifolds as well. Brazing was allways better.

Fiber glass shelled kit car with tubular chassis. Liege. Didn't want to Braze as I was running low on oxy and it was the weekend.

It cracked in the extreme cold. I think it must have had hidden stresses.

I welded an exhaust manifold by first putting in the barbeque until red hot, then mig welded it and put it back in the barbeque and let it cool overnight. Worked great.

Exhaust manifolds are cast steel, not cast iron.

If you only have a blow torch you may get away with silver solder, you could always add some beef to the repair by fashioning a piece of 20x3mm flat around the return edge and solder that in place.

I welded an exhaust manifold by first putting in the barbeque until red hot, then mig welded it and put it back in the barbeque and let it cool overnight. Worked great.

I worked in a foundry for a while and cylinder blocks sometimes had faults that could be welded, so they had an oven which slowly raised the temp of the block to just dull red heat, welded the fault, then back in the oven to let it cool. Whole job took 24 hours.

Cast iron is totally unsuitable for an exhaust manifold, try hitting one with a hammer. Then try the something with something that is cast iron........

an exhaust manifold made of nodular or malleable cast iron is not uncommon, but rather the rule.
