More to the point, what does a pergola actually do? There is no roof to stop the rain, its open structure doesn't protect from wind, it creates an obstruction in an otherwise open space.

Im at a loss as to their purpose- maybe a garden fashion statement from the tommy walsh / alan titchmarsh era

Aren't pergolas usually free standing and often have 8 sides with a pointy roof?

This I would describe as a lean too, car port type arrangement, but then what do I know!

Pergolas can be any shape with flat or pointy roof just a structure not filled in, bit pointless really.
