Wellies buying.....

Believe it or not, I've not owned a pair of wellies since I was a bairn and going to school [in short trousers ].

I'm contemplating getting a pair for car washing, garden work, sloshing around in inches of snow/slush etc. Any recommendations for a decent, reasonably priced brand - I don't want to spend oodles but would like them to be a comfy fit and last more than one Winter.

Also, when sizing, is it better to go a half size up from shoe size to accommodate thicker socks? Sorry for numpty questions...

Everyone will argue about brand but regardless of what brand you choose go for the neoprene lined ones. Get the correct size and just wear normal socks. Neoprene is the best thing to ever happen to wellies.

Dunlop acifort wellies you can't go wrong. Inexpensive,hard wearing, excellent grip and comfortable, more so with an insole. Oh and steel toes. Highly recommended. Cost around 30ish quid.

Grubs are comfy and warm but historically they've only survived about a year of my abuse. (Almost daily use and in workshops, garden, walks, shooting etc).

Recently switched to some Aigles which aren't the cheapest (circa £120 I think) but they've survived two years so far an no complaints or damage so far.

If you don't need puncture resistance/steel toecap then I'd go for foam EVA wellies. They are a game changer, feels like you are out in your slippers!

For just washing a car, I’d just go with a pair of cheap wellies.
The main problem with the expensive neoprene ones is, once you’ve had a pair, you can never go back. They are fabulous, I walk dogs in the winter and when my £4.99 B&Q specials started to leak my wife got me a set of Aigle neoprene ones and I can never wear a pair of cheap ones again.

+1 on neo's I bought a pair of 6mm neo Toggi about 7 year ago £80 ish iirc they've lasted really well, shooting fishing general walking when when it's been crappy not sure if they even make them now , but go try some and buy decent .

I used to wear Dunlop safety (NCB) wellies for trials riding, sadly no longer made. As others have said you can’t go wrong with neoprene lined ones for general use.

Dunlop Purofort Thermo Plus Full Safety Boot. I've had a pair for about 5 or so years. Very warm and comfy, light enough for walking the dog.

The only problem is the insulated sole adds about an inch of so of height. Which means I then scalp my bonce on the low door jamb in the living room. When I then start cursing and holding my bonce while imitating a John Cleese style crouched silly walk the missus says it serves me right for wearing boots in the house......

I usually wear a pair of chainsaw safety wellies if I need full waterpoof - Screwfix do some nice ones but I think mine are Husqvarna. Steel toecap and have screw in ice studs which are great for wet slippery wood as well. I really struggle with normal wellies because my calfs are huge - the Huqvarnas only just fit - no chance with normal ones - so I tend to wear my hiking boots instead.

I have some Barbour wellies, half expected them to be a fashion piece and not last, but 3 years of winter walking they are still waterproof and comfy. Excellent fit as well.

I bought some Stanley steel toe cap ones about 4 years ago, limited wear but excellent on muddy sites
