Welding whilst pregnant - risks?

I have to agree with Simondrains...

you'll probably get more exposure to EMI, etc, using a mobile phone, your TV or your microwave oven...especially if the door seals on the microwave are old and haven't been checked for a year or two.

I'd not worry about it but then I'm not a woman and I can sympathise with your worries.

EMF's - Woooaaahh!! now we're talking!

as an add on to my previous comments. EMF's are all around us , all the time. computers, mobiles, WIFI, microwaves, old "tube" type tv, and of course any electric wire with electricity going through it. Now your lecturer really is trying to scare you!!: I would suggest that driving too and from the college is more dangerous. I wouldnt worry about EMF.
If you do get to do the course, have fun, and all the best for the next nine months.

:lol: I don't think it's the tutor who's trying to scare me, (and I'm not scared) it's H&S lady. Tutor thinks it's fine but isn't allowed to accept me without GP's say so. It's him I need to sweet-talk.

Well all the info I can find seems to say that exposure to EMI's is not proved to cause any damage, particularly in later term. So I may have a case yet!

Once went on a bricklaying course, and towards the end of the course the 'elf'n'safety' lady came to inspect us. we all had to wear googles that day and were told not to swear. Anyway the thing that horrified her the most was that we had to bend down to lay the the first few rows of bricks, and that it would be better if we started building the wall three foot in the air!!!
never did understand that one.

Probaly concerned about your back...

I have no experience when it comes to pregnancy (due to the fact that I'm 18 and male :P) but as far as electromagnetic fields goes, you should be fine as long as you don't park your butt on the welders inverter. I personally think the UV-radiation from the arc is at least 10 times more dangerous, and the heat, esp. when it comes to gaswelding.
