Or, I'd argue, what type of work you are capable of. For some people, 30 grand a year is the dream. If that's the case, fair play to them.Depends on the work you do though

Completely agree. Any of us who are self employed or own businesses know that our hourly charge out rate usually has very little in common with our profit figure. No but a lot do.@Climber
If a lot of self employed worked out the hours worked, worried, did the accounts, tried to collect money owed, £10 hour would sound good.
When I retired we had national Co's saying 90\120 day payment from end of month invoiced then there was the companies that did not pay in Nov Dec when you phoned in January some paid Nov & Jan conveniently forgot Dec ! when asked about non payment was asked to submit the bill again another 90\ 120,Just got fed up with the whole thing, the work was interesting\rewarding the rest was S***t
Then you get the paperwork to get on site, induction, tool checks all time you don't get paid for in the main a 1\2 hour job can turn into 3 hours.
To much time must find more to do
Nope I mean for every minute i'm doing something work related someone is paying me my hourly rate to do it.Have been self employed for over 60 years loved most of it always liked the business I have been in, employed people & always tried to be fair with wages, the overheads, legislation, has\is killing the smaller people,
I would like to find a job I could charge for every minute, or do you mean you only charge for the time you have work (eg. 3 out of an 8 hour day)
No, been there, done that. Now it's just me, a computer and a phone. Employees not looking after my kit had me considering murder more than once. In one way or another, people are the cause of most business related problems. Now if anyone wants to be a problem, they have to pay my invoice first. Not quite the same if you have overheads & employees.
Cant remember the figurers but with the garages we broke costs down to about Thursday lunch time\ Friday before we were actually earning for the Co.
We still had an accountant that makes 2+2=4 not like some of the modern variety
I have done this also but before I committed I negotiated longer payment terms with my supplier for this jobs materials. It worked out quite well and as my word, I paid the supplier the day I received payment.

its like that on most other trades out there
unless the government slam a hard import tax on everything coming in our business are not going to compete this post is a prime example of it

unless your a pen pusher behind the desk if its a hard labour job we are going to wear out before pension age before that pen pusher is and theres no way in this world why a pen pusher should have that sort of ridiculous wage they get for that job
except when you *don't* get paid on time.
it goes downhill very quickly, then.
That’s a great wage, don’t know what you do but if you average 45-50 hrs per week your doing well for yourself
Christmas time and summer time I buy certain people wine, beers or spirits or flowers just as a thank you for their continued support, some I never meet but converse with via email or phone but the relationship I build with them ensures I don’t get missed come payment run time
For cases like this you need to know and capture your audience. Get to know the FD or accounts department for the company you are working for and explain to them what you have had to do in order to complete their requirements. I can do better than that and I barely weldJust walked past a fab shop and seen this:
The guy is on £ 8:50 an hour . He caught me taking a photo and asked what I was doing?? Told him I was taking a picture of his welding -- He was chuffed.View attachment 188269

Something else to be mindful of is robotics becoming viable for even small scale fabrication. A friend who runs his own steel company which is predominately builders beams and steel frame buildings was at a show in Europe recently looking at automation,he was looking at machines that could load their own material, cut, drill, flange and weld structural beams with no one on the workshop floor. This kind of kit is now an affordable option for small scale shops so I think we need to be mindful of this before manpower and all the nonsense that goes with it becomes uneconomical.

Careful with that one!
In some sectors that would get you taken off the approved vendors list.
never done any work for Donald Trump then?
