Next time I see him I'll ask - I think it's to do with expansion / contraction at very high temperatures, certainly not longevity as they make the same ones day in, day out - for a very limited market.
I'm not sure if they even use pipe in that grade, a lot of the stuff is made from sheet. Maybe some of the lower end track car exhausts are made from pipe, BTCC type stuff probably never gets the chance to corrode as it's most likely twisted round an axle before the end of it's second or third race....
I've seen 316 used for marine exhausts quite a bit.
