I have formulated a theory. The sparp is a creature that spends it's formative years or larval stage in the chassis of old Land Rovers or nowadays is adapting to Discovery chassis. It is awakened from it's dormant stage by the heat from welding and seeks to mature in the inner ear or nasal cavity of a human host.

Hey Suffixb, there are a couple of reasons you may be getting better results on the bench than underneath a vehicle,
1, The bench is acting as a heat sink so the excess heat is being sucked up by the table plus the fact that it is horizontal so the bead lays down better and you also have better torch control.
2, Working overhead is more difficult to keep your torch steady and a constant distance from the work, you are probably more uncomfortable and further away from your weld area so you don't get burnt, as you no longer have a heat sink to cool your weld pool so the molten metal will sag and sometimes fall off.
3, Is your metal under the car as clean as the metal you are welding on the bench.
My first choice would be to drop the voltage down a smidge especially as the panels won't have a heat sink, or increase the wire feed slightly and work faster, just be carefull in that increasing the wire speed will generally also increase the amperage so you may have blow throughs.
Just my suggestions for what it's worth.

obvioulsy it will being an invertor must mean it inverts the weld piece
