I have recently picked up a Clarke 151TE and have had good success doing runs, tacks, etc on a peice of 1mm steel I picked up. Have also tacked an exhaust heat shield in place that was flapping about, but that is about all the "non-practice" stuff I have done.
Now a friend of mine is wanting to weld his turbo to his manifold because he seems to go through a gasket a week (not quite, but you get the point) due to there being no flexi-section in the downpipe. He has asked me if I could do it for him, it's a stock cast manifold and stock turbo which I believe also uses a cast hotside.
So anyone got any advice, hints, tips, etc for doing this? Plan is to have them both off the car, bolted up properly in place and just weld around the joint, but how hard is it to weld 2x cast peices together with a mig? Also, what is the worst that could happen? I mean if we try and it can't be done but there is no damage then no problem, he can get it done elsewhere. However if there is a risk of perminant damage such as warping or cracking either part then it's probably best if he gets it done elsewhere.
If we do go ahead with it, what settings do people recommend? 3 max with the appropriate wire speed? Tack it all up then do short runs at a time until it's all done?
