Hi,
I've been doing some work on a vintage tractor. On the front wheels the majority of the wheel studs are turning in the hub. Originally they would be in with a spline but the splines have stripped. I've taken the wheel hub's off with the wheel still attached and plan to tack weld the studs in place. I've got a small mig welder which would hopefully do the job.
From a theoretical side of things welding hardened steel bolts to a cast hub would be a big no no unless you had special equipment.
But my question is has anyone done this before? Did you have to replace the hub after or did you get away with it? The tractor only does 20kmh and will probably never be on the road. New hubs would be around £100, however the hubs don't come with splines in and so I'd probably still have the same problem.
Cheers,
