I am new to welding and have a BOC Magmate 180C. I bought it as they said it would do thin stuff. It welds thicker stuff really well - no problem. But I think I need some advice on how to handle the thinner stuff as I just make a hell of a mess. Sometimes, I can do several inches of perfect welding, then, it blows through. Maybe it's because I slow down - my instinct is to turn it down but then, at the lowest settings, the wire burns back before it reaches the metal. Any ideas?

What is the minimum amp setting on the machine spec plate ? You can trigger it and weld using a series of spots joined together giving the metal time to cool till you get the hang of thinner metal. If the wire is burning back turn the feed rate up a bit.

Is basically a build up of heat. The thinner the plate the quick it heats up, you can see the weld is ready to blow through. I would personally stop let the job cool then carry on. If your burning through quickly your voltage setting may be to high and requires turning down to reduce the heat it may then require you to turn the wire down as the wire might start spitting. You can look at settings all day but good welders dont need to look at the setting as they are listening and looking at the weld to then make required adjustments. hope this helps
