welding the same steel twice

hi guys.

doing a chopper bicycle project and carried it for a test ride today. it doesnt handle so nice and after investigation im contemplating changing the rake angle.

i mig welded the frame and now as im having to make changes i will be cutting the neck joint to make my changes.

can i weld on a spot that was already welded on before. especially considering im going to re weld an area that will be under alot of stress ?

i appreciate any advice guys

its my opinion that if your skilled enough to cut the welds without cutting into the head or any of the original pipe and remove all the weld material after the parts have been seperated then it should be good provided the metal was not heat treated,this may not be technically correct but they are the facts in the real world

The headstock on choppers is under massive stress, yet I am always surpprised that none of the bikes my friends have built has suffered any sign of failure there. Some of ours have had to be reworked, yet no problems.

thanks for the replies guys..and you're 100% right chunkolini ....too much trail....i basically zig zag all the way down the street

i was thinking today of a way to change the rake angle without cutting the steer tube off.

im thinking of notching the backbone and downtubes. after notching i then bend the tube to close the holes and then weld them together.

on paper, this looks like it will allow me to change the rake angle....but i dont know if notching is the way to go in terms of strength

i made a sketch using paint ( sorry, dont have auto cad....just manual cad)

let me know if this looks feasable....or better yet...has it been tried and worked....

Notching and bending tubes is a disgusting practice, it is not safe and is fundamentally wrong, let alone welding over other welds.

You are doing well. Just dont ever paint anything.

Have a close look at the beautiful workmanship on The Poision Dwarf, see the love and passion that went into crafting that .... thing? My mate described it as a scab of weld on wheels.
I was stressed when I made it, very stressed, very very stressed.
I had to do something or crack up. So I thought of the cow and did this.

On a serious note, never ever butt weld forks or frame tubes. That is a recipe for having no face. You can ram a piece of solid bar up inside, or best of all find a tube that will slip inside the joint like a ferrule, and weld that to hell. Oh, always have at least one semi functioning brake, there is a reason for this, ahem.

You poor poor boys, removed from the gene pool by your own stupidity.

It is nice though to leave the names on the tubes to p**s people off, see top tube on Godzuki, that was a classic race frame, but some idiot broke the stays jumping it.

Anyway, I'd assumed double butted referred to the way the things were stuck together, with, like, those fancy extra bits at the end of the tubes. There you go.
Do those bits have names BTW? I just googled "bike tube butt" and decided it's time to put safesearch on Whaddamistakatamaka!

Double butted is sooo old hat Asymmetricial/differentially shaped butts is where it's at although there's also bi-oval/eliptically shaped butted tubing and sometimes the seat tube is triple butted which sounds even kinkier but just means that the butting is external at one end, internal at t'other or sometimes that the butts are different thicknesses at each end. Chunko' do you still have elbows in the convential sense or are you now composed mostly of scar tissue? Fantastic collection, maybe lacking a 'conventional' unridable bike or 2 (thinking elliptical wheels if you can get head around the spoke lengths needed, preferably with ass about face steering)
