welding table

I am about to restore my triumph and need to make a work bench. As my garage is small and i dont have room for a work bench and a welding table i was thinking of building a wooden bench with a 20mm ply top (10mm cut in half) and then putting a 3 or 4 mm metal plate on it securing it with counersunk screws so i can weld on the plate and then rebuild the engine and gearbox on the wooden ply top. is this a workable idea?

Why do you need to remove the metal sheet to work on the engine?

the metal would be easier to clean off the oil afterwards, i would leave the metal on

Yup and it won't get grinding debris embedded in it either. Not what you want when building an engine.

Hi,

you need a disposable sheet over the top to protect your welding sheet/workbench top.

It doesn't need to be anything much, a washing machine side panel, or a dexion shelf. Anything around 1mm thick will do. You can grind it off every few weeks and if it gets too bad you just bin it and get another one.

Our bench-tops at work are 3/4" ply with 1.5mm galv sheet bent over and screwed down at the front/back. Not welding benches though.
Your design sounds good, but i agree with the others, don't bother removing the steel top!

If I'm working outside I use a dual height Black and Decker workmate and put on a piece of 3/4" OSB sheet with a 3x2 screwed to the back then clamp it in the jaws. I stand the chop saw or whatever I'm using on it and when I'm welding I put a piece of aluminium sheet on it.
