Something which has come up at my work (which has nothing to do with welding) has aroused my curiosity - is there a recognised process for welding steel to aluminium?
Wouldn't think you could actually WELD it because of the different melting temperatures. More likely a solder/bond type joint required.
Also, aluminium and steel in close contact will result in galvanic corrosion so should be avoided where possible.
They can be bonded together by a special process. On the ships that had Ally superstructure and steel hull they used to have a bonded plate at the interface. The Al was on top for the superstructure and the steel was on the bottom for the hull.
I think they call it diffusion bonding. Its held under pressure and heat and eventually the two plates stick toghether.
There isnt really any way to weld Ally to steel but there is a trick way
Ally
weld a layer of Ally Bronze
weld a layer of Copper (or CuSi)
weld a layer of Copper Nickel
weld to the Steel
