Hi folks,

Welding Solution for Stock Car Repairs at Track!

Tried to use my MIG (Clarke 150) and a Clarke Arc welder (not sure model does 160amp) with a 6.5KVa generator tonight with no success...well MIG did try but not powerful enough to penetrate.

So looking for advice on solutions.

Need to weld up to 3mm box to repair bumpers etc.

bigger genny, saw some guys welding up some stock cars the other week in the travellodge car park

get yourself a mosa petrol stick welder if u can afford one that's all we ever used

Sounds like you need an engine driven welder, search for genset welder or engine welder on eBay.

Hmmm...yeah would mean a BIG genny...and they are pricey too!

"Engine driven Welder"....great shout for me to search on.

This is half the problem, knowing what I actually need...and what they're called.

Lombardini 1 off our big EDWelders had one Scary price repairs & parts some time ago I know there were other problems as well it was a Diesel though, if I remember a stud sheered of in the block no fun at all.
It did do a lot of work before it clapped but we sold the welder after spending, it never ran nice after

Mate races - Lochgelly (10 mins away from Racewall)
1300 Stock Car.

Lochgelly circuit also has a wall, so easy to knock the corners out of shape.
(We do need to convince him to learn how to weld, his dad does main stuff..but misses some joints which does not help!)

We are very lucky to have two tracks so close, shame they've fallen out over clashing dates and formula!
Lochgelly races under Spedeworth.

Have seen on youtube in past the use of a spool gun (and flux core wire?) powered from car batters.
Or the is the "Ready Weld" (think that name is right)

stick welders the best when u have to weld your bumpers and suspension brackets back on and only have 20 mins to do it all between races

Did see a clip from Oz, the trucker got his jump leads out put them accross two linked batteries ,used them as earth and stinger, wacked a rod in one and started welding, it got him out of trouble.

Park next to me and use mine In all seriousness though stick will do but it's a bit tricky at times as I've some 1.6 in my car and its "challenging" at times, you really need a little inverter type mig as the repairs in the pits are usually good enough to stay on.
But it's never that simple as welders do take a fair bit of juice to run.

How do you pronounce this? I have always said it like "speedworth" but my mate insists it's "spedworth"

Yes but if cash is tight to buy a decent generator, Oxy is effective and can be bought for not much cash. You can do a lot of welding in 20 minutes.
