Welding screws

Needed some short pegs as standoffs the other day so after a bit of thought I had a root around in my box of old screws (never know when they will come in handy)

Grabbed a few the same length and got to work welding them to some bar. Some of them just wouldnt take the weld though.

Why is that then? Is there a way to weld to them? Preheating or something?

Or is welding screws onto stuff silly and i shouldnt be so tight and just go buy some rod?

I have welded plenty of bolts onto things, how are you doing it?
Butt welding them onto bar or welding them onto plate?
Most of them are plated, this can cause problems with the weld, try grinding it off.
Welding scrws/bolts onto stuff is fine, why spend money if you dont need to. Threaded is the same as bolts, just longer and has not got a hex head on it. Woffle woffle.
if they are quite thick, say more than 8mm grind them to a point where you want to weld them, this will allow full penetration and stop them coming adrift.
