Welding scooter aluminium casings adv

Hi guys

I am looking for a little advice on a set of scooter casings I wish to weld

The aluminium is super clean ( yes super clean) and looks a good quality grade

theres about 5mm wall thickness minium

my questions are

do I need to pre heat???

if so to what temp

there is a very thick area that I need to build up around the exhust mounting
will this do as the pre heat as its not a critical area

once welding and its getting hot, do I rest it to cool it down any or weld it out from start to finnish

I am welding the transfur ports for tuning, I want to avoid any destortion

Iv e done a few lambretta casings , I never preheated , most were very porous , lots of oil on them , make sure to clean off oil , had a fair bit of success !

I did an old triumph one A few weeks ago, looked ok, but when I stuck a blow lamp on it to burn off any oil, you could see the porosity/ ingrained oil. Good clean with acetone when cool and it welded ok.

What about distortion through to much heat

I did a couple of bits on my Lambretta magneto housing, I did heat with a blowlamp to clean up but not for the welding.

Done loads of Lambretta casings, no pre heat, no problem. That looks like a Vespa casing, done a few of those for a guy that sprints them, you do need to be careful re distortion as the parent material isn’t overly thick. I just do them a bit at a time and allow to cool, I always clamp them down to bench top whenever I can
