Welding rod choice

Morning. have a mate who needs to repair some cow feeder augers. The auger flights are stainless steel, and he has used hard facing rods in the past on the auger flights. But now they have worn again and he finds using hard facing rods on top of he previous hard facing just makes everything brittle. Are there some other rods he could easily use to overcome this and prolong the life of his augers?

    Thanks

get some stainless steel rods, they burn quite nicely at lower amps watch the slag though it pings off as it cools

He could lay a buttering pass of 309 stainless or similar. Then hard face on top again.

Or it might be the lack of pre-heat which is causing the brittle failures - possibly needs to be a couple hundred degrees or so.

Really depends on what hardfacing was used. There are many different compositions. The best way is to remove all the old hardfacing which is obviously not easy. Can you find out what was used? If we know that its a good start.
