Morning all...dose weld through primer actually work.....or is it a case of it sounds good on the can but ain't worth a wristy ..

It's good so long as its a thin layer, the structural steel I have been welding came with a weld through primer on. A couple of places it looks as though it ended up with two coats and although the MMA was fine I did have a couple of porosity issues with the MIG where the primer was heavy, nothing major that needed grinding out but I noticed the difference.

when weve had previous repairs come back with more damage at work , id say its better than nothing at all but seams will still rust
try and seam seal and /or cavity wax as well

its most useful for the bare steel areas that are not reachable after the welding as in the case of a closed chassis section for instance. You could paint the steel prior to welding with any old paint but if you got it into the weld pool youre in trouble. weather it protects the welded area its self? open to mass debate. (not recommended when welding)

I knock the majority off with a quick grind up where the welds are on heavy steels to save porosity problems.
Depending on which supplier it came from, some (well, one, who shall remain nameless!) can be a right pain, on so thick it even clogs grinding discs..so totally un-weldable.

Slightly OT but I sprayed some cut down / side ground to bare metal KeeKlamp fittings with the cheap cold galv paint from Screwfix -

and unimpressed with it as seemed to just be silver paint.
Anyway the fittings have been lying on the ground down the garden for a couple of years and still no rust broken through
One of the fittings was attached to a pole and the fixing screw wouldn't come undone - snapped an Allen key trying ! Got propane torch out and heated it as hot as possible but screw still firm however the paint didn't even discolour, bubble or was affected in any way.
So whilst I was initially wary about it being just silver paint it's proved to be perfect for use on hidden cavities before you close the ends up as not affected by heat.
