Welding planetary gears on a differential

I have just purchased a sealey supermig 195, second hand but done little work, I need to weld the planetary gears together on a differential unit to make a locked unit for autograss racing.

I have never done this before so I am requesting a little help, how much de greasing of the gears do I need to do prior to welding and is my welder upto the job?


Any advice very welcomed

i used to weld mine up for stock car racing just a quick clean over with parafin or petrol as its only oil on them . i stick welded mine at 90 amps . just cover the crown wheel and pinion up with a wet rag to make sure it doesnt get damaged with spatter type in 4x4 diff in search box above your name top right .theres a post on them there

Welder is plenty big enough. For mine I didn't go mad with degreasing - just enough to get the oil off. Though spatter is an issue inside a diff - might want grease on the bearings to stop spatter getting in and a good wash out afterwards.
