Welding patch in floor plan - avice needed

I have a small lpatch to repair in the floorpan on the mk2 golf restoration.

Planning to use my setter to set an edge but the questions i have are

use a circle of square cut out ?

weld from the bottom or top ? set top or bottom ?

then do i plug weld or just seam weld top and bottom ?

hope this make sense

the whole aint that big probably about 2inch diameter i dont need to fabricate replacement part as i have another shell to hack peices off

If you're goner flange the edge I would have thought a square is the way to go, unless you have a 'rolastep' or similar for flanging a curve panel.

Is there any reason why you would want the grief of welding upside down? You could put your tacks on from the underside and then weld on the topside if welding over tacks bothers you - I personally would do the lot from above.

If you are letting in a repair to an area then you have no choice but to do a continuous weld - If you want to keep Mr MOT man happy:
If you're unpicking a OEM panel (which was spotted in the factory) and replacing the whole panel; then it is acceptable to follow that process.

If it is a patch to the floor pan I would butt weld it in and grind down the weld afterwards.

Overlap patches are bad on a floor pan as they can trap moisture leading to more rust!

Would agree 100%. But if you're not keeping it more than a couple years, flanging and setting in a panel is easier and quicker.

This is something the trade do almost every time, the exceptions being if it's a classic concours vehicle, with some sb likely to be minutely examining the underside, or if for some technical reason it has to be butt-welded.

On floor repairs to my own keeping vehicles I'd butt-weld every time, but if I was thinking of letting it go in a year or so I'd take the easy route...

the best method I have found is cut out square from the sheet your going to use notch the 4 corners approx 10mm hammer up the 4 sides weld up corners mark through and cut out the floor place in and weld edge to edge from the top keeps the repair very strong and very easy to do

Form a tray, offer up to hole, scribe around and cut out; then drop in the repair and weld to outer face..

as in your sketch just a shallow tray but the open end will be on the inside of the floor it will allow u to tap it in our out to fit your cut out and because u will be welding edge to edge it makes it much easier to weld with no distortion and the shape of the tray will give the repair loads of strenth

In-fact as soon as the welder comes back out I'm going to try a few things
