Welding P*rn!

Been working on a control system for a new heat treatment furnace which is being installed at a place that makes parts for the oil/gas industry (The underwater valves and manifolds that sit on top of oil wells under the sea).

Had a tour around their "european welding development centre" a few weeks ago - made me feel a bit inadequate with my little R-tech!

I now have a serious case of welder envy

No cameras allowed or I would have obliged, some of the stuff they are doing there seems to be a bit secretive, not for security reasons (I don't think) but probably from an intellectual property point of view.

Picture loads of booths though with various robotic arms, turntables etc and stacks of pretty classy welding machines (mainly fronius from what I saw). I got shown around by a dr of welding (I think he's a metallurgist but I prefer "dr of welding")!!

I've been in dirtier hospitals, the place was pretty spotless.

Yes it was Matt, I've never really been to anywhere like that before. (We do a bit with aero heat treatment places, but generally they have fairly small scale welding gear, this was a different league altogether)

I'm sure to someone like you who works with stuff like this every day it's quite ordinary but for me it was pretty neat !

Here's a couple of pics from the entrance to their weld centre, didn't fancy wandering around taking snaps inside in case someone took offence. Some nice kit in there though
