It's a bit long winded so I apologise now! I've started down the road to learning the art of mig welding in the last year to do car repairs and restoration for myself, I'm not much good and need more practice! (Just pointing out that I'm still a bit clueless when it comes down to the technical side of welding!)
Anyway to my question, I'm hoping in the future to embark on a trip to Australia by road with a couple of friends, visiting as many countries as we can on the way, the idea being that it'll take 8 or 9 months in a 30 year old 4x4 and possibly towing a sankey ex-army trailer. We will need to be fairly self sufficient and one of the things I'm concerned about is the ability to get ourselves out of a bind should something snap or crack in the middle of nowhere, such as an oil pan or a suspension mount and recovery will in some cases almost be out of the question and other cases cost thousands of pounds!
So really I'm talking about a back up plan here, space and weight will be at a premium on the vehicle, but it's nice to know you can get out of a situation should the need arise. I've come across battery welding with metal coathangers which seems to be the norm in some parts of Africa (seriously!!) but I don't want to kill my batteries and was wondering and bear in mind it's not something that'll be used everyday, if a smallish genny and arc welder might be a better option as the genny could also be used when camping.
Is it possible to weld with an arc welder for short periods of time using a small genny and what welder/genny combination would you think might be a suitable in this case? It wont need to do fantastic welds, just enough to get us back on the road to a garage where the vehicle could be repaired properly. Cost will also be an issue, I don't want to spend a fortune, in all probability I'd be looking for second hand equipment.
So that's my conundrum, hope you guys could give me a bit of guidance and cheers for bearing with me!
