How big and what type of diesel tank? What are the HSE, insurance and safety considerations when welding on a Deisel tank?
Will a welding trade insurance cover that ?
There are several questions in your post
Most important one is safety considerations, the rest kick in if it goes wrong
if they get a build up of fumes inside there not when your welding need to know the full facts before anyone can give adviceDiesel tanks are ok to weld,
Petrol tanks are trickier to weld.
Nothing like it making it easy….Do you have access to open top and clean inside. If you can I would. If you cant your into flushing and purging.Tank built into the stern hull of a narrowboat. That part of the hull is sectioned off and is used as the fuel tank on most NB's.
Some truth in that. Its not uncommon to do it, if the tank is big enough. You only get vapour if the liquid gets hot enough to flash off, you only get fire if there is oxygen and an ignition source. If there is a risk of heating the liquid, purge the surface to exclude oxygen.Urban myth is that a full tank to the brim can't produce any vapour and you can weld to the outside of it.
thats a first on this forum then.need to know the full facts before anyone can give advice
Diesel tank don’t build fumes like petrol…you better try it for yourself !if they get a build up of fumes inside there not when your welding need to know the full facts before anyone can give advice
Just welded a Volvo truck diesel tank 2 days ago, it still had diesel inside which helped to see if e leak has cured. The tank was made out of steel and powder coated, it started rusting from under the paint. Metal was badly pitted and even advised the owner to get another one- he was adamant to keep using it for a few more years ! The weld was the size of a 50 pence coin and took 2 tries to seal. It wasn’t even washed of diesel…thats a first on this forum then.
it does when your welding and builds up the burning oil fumes . and i have tried and seen it .yes your correct on petrol fumes thats instant with a lightDiesel tank don’t build fumes like petrol…you better try it for yourself !
Thats when boats were made from wood , and men were made of steel. We converted a trawler to a floating nightclub, the 2 diesel bunkers held about 40 tons each side.
One got turned into a bar, and I remember my pal Joe gas-cutting out the serving hatches etc, from the inside of the tank. Sparks and hot swarf flying all over the place.
While I tended the gas lines over the sharp edges, he was standing in the tank, ankle-deep in diesel, smoking a fag
