Welding lifting equipment

We have a lot of metal work hanging from beams, tracks etc. that is on the lifting equipment register and is checked/assessed regularly. If a crack is found a defect notice is issued to get it repaired or replaced within a certain timeframe depending on severity. Repairs could include welding and a failure during production can be welded to keep job going.
My question is, does whoever does the welding need to be coded/registered? and are there any BS or EN standards that cover this type of work?.
Had a look at LOLER but couldn't find anything.

Pass to the insurance to comment perhaps? As they might have a take on things in thier t&c's

We looked into this last year when we took a job on to supply lifting beams to a lift company which were lengths of beam with lifting eyes welded on.

The official line was that as long as the welder is certficated to BS9606 and the completed item is load tested then everyone is happy. I couldnt find anything to conflict with this at the time.

We have done lifting points on equipment/jigs etc in the past.... some ask for the welder to be qualified to 287/9606 or whatever it is these day, some ask for it just to be welded and load tested...some ask for it to be just welded then NDT to some standard or other....
Weve made our own lifting beams/fork attachments etc that are on our register and regularly inspected...as long as the insurance man has signed it off...

Oh I bet it does.

But, if I were the coded one and knew somebody else was welding it but it was going to be my name on the line then unless I was very confident in the other person's abilities I would have something to say.

Same as being the only person who can change abrasive wheels - if anything happens then 'of course that disk was changed by Mr. X, he's qualified...' - not very good for Mr. X if there has been an accident due to a badly fitted disk.

We use a local fabrication company, we do not specify which welder person they use to weld it together.......... They weld up to our drawing/spec. Then they get it load tested with local recognised lifting equipment certification company. Item is then delivered with certs and entered onto the lifting equipment register for its next inspection date, and put to use......
