I had to replace some wear strips on the rails of moveable racking in a -30 cold store. It was 8mm strip welded to 25mm rail I tried 3.2 and 4mm rods up to 200amps but couldn't get any penetration at that temperature.
When you first go in it doesn't feel to bad but after 10 minutes you are heading for the door. Very much like the otherI would imagine even the most well endowed would struggle with penetration at those temps
If, you were working to a proper WPS, there may likely be a minimum temperature for the material. May not much, but above 0 probably.
The arc is probably 3000*c and steel melts about 1500*c, I don't think your -15*c is going to make much difference as long as the metal is puddling
Yes but they use heat treatment blankets, and pre heat with torches etc. I aint not mettaligist type, but have some recolection about temprature change affecting the crystaline structure of the metal. Hence why different steels are used in the manufacture of process equipment that may be subject to very low tempratures.-15,Think yourself lucky your not welding a trans Siberia pipeline .
Should have just stuck it on one finger and put another in the welders socket, would have kept your hand warm in the cold weatherthanks everyone
i couldn't do any welding anyway. i bought a new welder on friday and they have supplied a female instead of a male plug connector for the earth cable/electrode holder.
so job stopped. gutted/raging i am trying to get on.
Got a 35/50 plug and socket here which you're welcome to grab if it's helpful. Where abouts are you?thanks everyone
