Welding in films and tv...

This has started to bug me a bit.

Whenever I see a show or film where someone is welding 9/10 times they are using mig but most of the time the migs don't have a shroud and/or a gas bottle.

Case in point. The Walking Dead season 6 episode 13 "The Same Boat"
The character 'Morgan' is welding up some box section for a prison cell or some such, as he finishes welding the camera picks up clearly that there is no shroud on the torch and no gas bottle in sight and his stickout is waaay too long

Now I know that its all make believe but surely they could have sprung for an empty gas bottle and a shroud at least and maybe a couple of hours of tuition...

I always think of the full Monty when flash dance is mentioned, several Yorkshire blokes watching flash dance and the welding scene comes on (a very bad attempt at stick welding),
And one of them pipes up "even I can weld better than that, far too much acetylene!".

And the kids bike sounds like a two stroke but the engine looks to be from an XR125

I'm no expert, but if you are welding gasless mig then you don't need to use a shroud do you ? I.e the purpose of the shroud is to concentrate the gas around the weld ?
Can't comment on the stickout , but I presume he is actually welding in the scenes ??

GYS gasless MIG torch set up, one torch set up for gas, another for fluxcore.

Its no worse than the old war films when they burn through the hull of a sinking ship with a welding torch and a nice big yellow flame.

As 80B says above, It's the colour of the Sparks and spatter that always gets me. No matter what they are doing they always have the wrong coloured sparks!

The old war was fought in Black and white, wern't no yella flames know what ya mean though, I wish we had had them hand grenades that blow up buildings, and them sub machine guns with 1000 round mags

And following the A-Team theme, you can empty 4,000 rounds (from 4 weapons, so presumably using the mythical 1,000 round magazines) from 20 feet and not hit or injure a single human being....

YEAH then there's a thing called U tube or summat like that and there's several on there------- one is called jodi (weldin ti ts n tricks) (called that to get you to watch!!)
and also some 'foreigner' (well he doesnt speak inglish) called double boast, and they film them weldin and when they finish the camera pans back in, for us to see the weldbeads they have pretended to produce and its showin perfect welds
HA makes you laugh who do think they are kiddin...

Funnily enough, Nursy and I watched two films in the same weekend where hand grenades were depicted with rather more realism (i.e. one man throws himself on it to absorb the blast, albeit fatally) than the usual 'nuclear holocaust on a stick'... Kingsman and Hacksaw Ridge.

I get irritated by the way that automatic weapons (in films) are repeatedly cycled, despite having just done so seconds earlier. At that rate they'd have rounds all over the floor and none left to fire

Or poor continuity, where in one shot you can see the hammer back on the Colt .45 (or whatever) but in the next it's down... camera angle shifts, hammer's cocked... and so on.

And of course the perennial shootout where the big crew of evil henchmen can't hit a barn door with entire magazines from assault rifles despite, presumably, being experienced gunmen, yet 'our hero' can plug one man with one bullet from an inch-long barrel whilst running, jumping, flying a plane and shagging Siena Miller in the same breath...
