Welding helmet running down batteries

I always thought without the battery you are always in dark (safe) mode?.

My Esab stays light without the battery.

I have a cheap sealey with no grinding or shade adjustment knob - and it's just worked for years.
I then got a "better" Boler one with my Oxford, and that goes flat, and I bought a Parkside with a built-in light, which seems to eat batteries.
(None get used enough, and I've stored them in boxes to protect - but the Sealey one is the only one I can just grab and use)

Never realised the battery thing was a problem until this week when both helmets died, one is about 15 years old and always worked but it seems leaving it out of the box killed it, this cheapy I've had about 18 months and wasn't expecting to have much luck battery wise but bingo it's got a little draw that takes a lithium battery

Waited a few days for the new battery then found the spare it came with!

i think it pays off just getting a good one like speedglas in the beginning. save yourself the hassle later on. my xx mask bateries last nearly 3yr with daily use.

I had a speedglas that worked fine for a couple of years then started eating batteries once a fortnight, and I was using it every day!

I got sick of the auto darkening helmets conking out, so just use a traditional fixed glass one again, that said I mainly only do stick welding anyway

Lincoln eventually sent me a new cartridge for my welding helmet and it’s been working fine. I noticed that the new cartridge had a warning label which read something like: “don’t use solvents near this item”. Seeing this made me remember that I used a little bottle of spray on the screen to stop the glass misting up. I used this maybe four or five times and i’am wondering could this have found its way into the electronics causing the batteries to run down quickly? Its definitely possible. I thought I better mention this, just in case someone else is using a similar product.

Not really they are not hard to get but not an everyday item that you can get at the average store.

i guess anything is possible. my xx (auto off feature) is nearly 6yr old using it nearly everyday and batteries last years. maybe its your batteries and not the lens ? maybe try a swiss renata instead of the cheaper chinese stuff. hardly nothing good comes from china in my experience

Not really they are not hard to get but not an everyday item that you can get at the average store.

I live in rural mid wales and nearest Halfords is 40miles+ away and same goes for McDonalds and hospital there is literally nothing round me so online is the only option for anything. I’ve yet to find one of them batteries round me in a shop
