welding galvanized roofrack

hi everyone I need to modify a galvanised roof rack the roofrack is quite old and the galvanised finish is worn and dusty ive heard that if u wed galvanised metal it gives off poisonous fumes if this is true is there any way I can remove the galvanised coating to make it safe

It can be sanded or ground off. A flapdisk will remove the coating easily.

Galv fumes are an irritant. If inhaled it will give you fume fever for day. If combined with respirary issues, it can be deadly,

thanx shenion will it create galv fumes when I grind off the coating and could I do this in my garden

Grinding will create a bit of dust but won't be a problem. I prefer to do the grinding and welding outside if possible.

A decent dust mask will stop you breathing in the grinding dust.

I use 3M masks, wrok well ive never had any symptoms from grinding or welding galv with one on

welding on galvanized material is a problem not only that it produces poison gases but it also makes your weld puddle flame up if you don't grind it completely clean,, now that makes for a problem when your material is thin ,, as far as the smoke it produces it can be solved with a simple fan or just good ventilation, always put yourself opposite of the direction of the smoke , if you do this you won't have a problem even without a mask, of course with the mask you're better protected and are advised to use !
