Welding from 3phase genny.

I have heard old wives tale that generators don't like welders. Is this just rubbish cos mine's just gone bang! Coincidence?

Genny 38kva 4cyl perkins diesel
Welder Cebora 403s mig

No point playing with the little toys.
I'm a self employed farm worker with a tractor fetish, and like designing implements / forklift attachments so 400amps is a must.

Hello Neil,

from what I understand they need to be quite a bit bigger than the welder. You have about 90 amps at 415 volts, how much current can the welder draw?

With 38Kva available the welder wouldn't complain about power shortage, but if you were welding at the time when your generator decided to commit suicide, it may have killed your welder as well....

remember that he said :- "so 400amps is a must."
How much input current does that need?

thanks for the happy thoughts zzr1200.

Welder says it draws 28 amp max, but may need more on strike up.
Genny says 52 amps max output, 90% safety factor?

It could just have been the genny's number was up?

What size genny is recommended for big migs?
