welding exhaust flexi on front pipe

anyone ever mig welded a front flexi
flexi has still got the outer braid cover attached but the inside flex bit has broken away at the front pipe as if it was not fixed in from new
and flexi pipe just slides over the solid pipe

I've fitted quite a few new flexible sections into pipes, they are available in all exhaust sizes cheap enough from motor factors. The inners break because of the stress and heat they are exposed to, they seem to be made of stainless wire mesh. I would not try to repair the flex pipe itself I think you would be on a hiding for nothing. You can get weld on or clamp on sections from exhaustparts uk.

The technique I've always used to assemble new flexible connectors is to make a collar out of thin ss strip, which fits closely over the raw end of the flexible. Then this is slid over the pipe to which it is to be attached with the collar slid back on the flexible to expose about 2mm of the raw hose. Then that end is welded to the pipe so that the bead also welds the collar. This ensures the flexible is completely sealed to the pipe and prevents the flexible being burnt back or holed. I used TIG though, but it should be possible with MIG.

it looks like the flexi has come out of the collar, i found repair sections on fley bay
it's just this one is only a year old passed mot like it slight blow noted
will know better when i remove it

Id say itll be unrepairable too, just replace the flex.

In the factory the exhaust pipe is simply shoved into the flex and a MIG weld put round, the weld taking in the collar and all the layers of the flex at once. Not too difficult to do yourself.

update

when i cut off the outer braid it's like a convelluted bellows
and under that normal flexi pipe
the bellows are broke at one end the flexi at the other so i have got a repair piece to be honest it looks like the one fitted was a bit short anyway
so rain stopped play at present
