Welding disimalar metals

I am trying to join 1/4 inch od tube Inconel 600 to 316 stainless hex fitting. These two metals have a tendency to crack when welded togeather. Any thoughts on the best filler material to use, or maybe preheating the materials... We are welding these on a turret at first by using Plasma welder (no filler material) but as stated they crack in the weld joint. We are going to try 309L filler material on a tig turret and see how that goes, but any further help would be welcome.

Hi Gat, difficult to offer a good guesstimic on best weld parameters for job in hand? 309 is a good call though for nailing the dissimilars together, introduction of filler wire may help in reducing cracking as acting as reinforcement? I have only welded inc to inc when I was on the tools, may be a purge would help too? About it really, I can only offer purge info as added help, let us know how you get on please. One last question, what is the use of the welded parts?

Thank you for taking the time to respond. The end result of this will be a temperature sensor used in a forging furnace...actually 200 of them. We have an Argon purge prior to the weld. We received in the 309L rod today so tomorrow we will run some experements and see what happens then.

I was going to suggest that too, many more pro's on there than on here although one member who would almost definitely be able to assist you is a member on there and on here, TechnicAl. He's away at the mo but I'm sure he'll pick this thread up when he's back.

you want INCONEL 625 and keep the heat input as low as possible. Use small wire diameter and low amps.

It was sugested to me today, that mybe I might like a visit to center parcs along with two other couples, everything about it sounds like hell......especialy the two other couples part, BTW no offence to anyone who enjoys the places......

I like to see something, I think history is fascinating. These modern man made places are not for me but my 7 year old Grandson thought it was wonderful.
Ive never drunk so little on holiday, no-one interesting to talk to.

I think there is definitely a centre parcs "type" and I definitely dont fit the spec. Mind you I dont fit many specs.

I'm normally banned from talking, Train's,welding,engineering,bluegrass music,agricultural/construction equipment, Or generally ranting about anything.....which forces me to be silent or drunk, then when I'm drunk IL talk about all of the above, last one off Mrs Cs work doo's I went on (and this was foolish to leave me any ware near these people) I got saddled with two Vegans, who started to preach the Gospel of meat free to me, two major floors in there plan 1,I know far more about food production, than someone who watched mockney Jamie O with his 20 year old out of date facts, 2) they both smoked around me like trains, which is an industry that practicaly invented animal teasting........ that was three years ago, Iv not been invited on another works function since, with luck center parcs will have the same vito.....

Hehe, it was funny but I was sat next to her when she chundered, never moved so fast in my life!
Her boss was good as gold though, pretty much ignored it.
