I'm in the processes of of making a bike frame at the moment, not actually started on the frame construction though.
We are planning on using 25cromo4 tubing which is a type of Cromoly, we wanted to use cromoly cos we understood it didn't need heat treatment...
Now Iv just got my 'Ron Covell - Advanced Tig Techniques' through the post, and in the 'Welding Cromoly' section he says that if using a cromoly welding rod you probably will need heat treatment because if the weld cools too quickly it can become brittle. He recons using a mild steel rod will negate the need for heat treatment.
Now my worry is that using a mild steel welding rod is going to defeat the object of using cromoly cos the welds are gonna weak as ****...?
Does anyone know? Or does anyone know where I can find this kind of information out? I'v done a number of internet searches for welding cromoly but as of yet I c an't find the kind of information I'm looking for.
P.S. Apparently 25cromo4 is less sensitive and has less of a requirement for heat treatment than 4130.
