welding car exhaust pipe, tips needed for novice.

I agree, and its appreciated, but your surely not saying that this horse can't drink water because it's the wrong type of water? I can get the exhaust to stick together but it's just messy, here's another quick one aswell, when I do a bit joint with 2 pipes, do I need them as the names suggests, butt up together or a slight gap between them? I am cleaning the pipe up first before I start.

You might do better doing a series of tacks, overlapping, hot on hot, rather than trying to do actual weld runs. You soon get a feel for it and it comes out fairly presentable looking. F

If an exhaust downpipe is the thing that you're trying to weld, then stick welding will do a decent job, as the metal tends to be slightly thicker there. Prep just involves taking the oxidation off, back to good clean shiny metal, and butt the pieces up.

Save yourself a world of hassle (I hate welding exhausts) and get something like this:

Loads on ebay, just measure the diameter needed. Chalk mark the length to chop, recip saw/grinder, deburr, slide on repair section, clamp, and away.

Thanks. That's only one part, I have one of them fitted already I have now tacked it in after the clamp was tightened
