Welding bench top

Hi all,

Bit of advice, I plan to build my new garage work bench with steel frame and a wooden top. I was hoping to be able to get a steel plate to use on top for when I need a welding bench.

I was a little unsure what thickness the steel would need to be for a decent top, I don't fancy setting fire to the wood underneath.

Id say build the bench completly from steel and then if you want a wooden top just have a sheet of wood you can lift off as alot lighter to move around. than a 3mm + sheet of steel

It would probably be easier to build a full steel bench with a 10mm or 12mm top and then have a removeable wood top.
Alot easier and lighter to remove

The wood might scorch a bit but it shouldn't catch fire the steel keeps oxygen away from it. My old bench just had some 1.2mm steel fastened over an old bit of work top and I was quite surprised how little damage there was to it when I chucked it out.

Maybe that's the better option, the bench will be on the back wall of the garage, probably 4m wide, I was thinking of having 2m of wood top and 2m of steel top.

I'm planning to build a housing underneath for my compressor, thought wood might be a better sound deadening.

More thinking required I guess.

dont forget the compressor will need some ventilation otherwise it may overheat!!!
