don't bother with all the divide this by that and then carry the 1. Do as we all do and use the 1 amp per 1 thou thickness theory. It isn't bang on but gets you close most of the time. If you want it in metric it is roughly 40 amp per 1mm

what process are you using? if you are using mig then there is no point calculating how many amps you need, as you cant select them anyway, you have to set the machine parameters so that you get the right sound most of the time. mig doesn't have a current selector, just voltage and wire speed. the current in a mig is more like in a normal kitchen appliance. the arc will draw as much current as it needs based on the other parameters, with arc and tig you set the current on a dial and that is what is always given out

You can get some handy Android apps for free, Miller, Lincoln and Fronius do one. The Miller and Lincoln are the better ones, select process, material, joint ect gives you a good starting point and travel speed. End of the day it's down to experience, but they are a good start..

Thanks for the replies, we have a young man arriving at our place on Friday to conduct some weld tests and give us guidance on the procedures needed to comply to the European CE directives associated with the structural steelwork we do. I recall being told the magical formula back in the day and was trying to bring it to mind more for my own satisfaction than anything else, the certificates/gradings or whatever they are are using the MIG. Not done any oxy-fuel welding for a long time but did have one a job for a previous employer brazing some copper lugs onto a submarine motor winding
. We're told each test is two hundred pounds plus and we all need three! Times that by eight blokes plus cost of matey for day and theres five and a half grand gone not to mention time lost! Anybody out there had to go through this yet? Chip

ChipWell today was the day of reckoning with the weld tests and it was a bit of a let down really, not sure quite what I was expecting but its involved doing a couple of test pieces that will be sent to Zurich for testing? The first was a straightforward butt joint with stop/start in root and cap, the second was a multi run fillet with a stop/start in root and cap and third was vertical butt with stop/start in root and cap all in 12mm material. The lad was saying it'll be upto six weeks to get the results due to a backlog having been built up !
Good luck with the tests, if you call them they will tell you over the phone whether the coupons passed the mechanicals.
We carried out some procedure qualifications 5 wks ago and are still waiting for them to come through, they are with RSA. They recon it will be a few weeks yet before we get them. They too have a backlog.
Some money racket, we have over 12k euro spent on procedures at this point.

Hitch these tests where for compliance to new CE regs, I work for a structural steel firm and we do a lot of refurb in old buildings as well as all new jobs,i did all these tests years ago as part of my C and G but it seems the firm now have to be up to date and able to show clients CE compliance. Im not going to say I found it easy but it was a bit of a back to school moment!

The reason I ask, we normally keep our EN287 ones up to date, but when having our first CE audit, we were picked up on the procedures being old, no one had the mechanical testing results for the procedure qualification anymore. We ended up doing a new procedure for it, in S355. If we passed it on S275, we wouldn't have been covered for welding any s355 material I believe.
