welding aluminium 1050 to 6082...

Hi



So clocked a fair few hours of practice in over the past few weeks on mild steel I feel just about confident to get stuck in and do something for real.



So here comes project number 1! First job is to make up some custom ram pipes for the mini. I couldn’t find any good quality pipes that were the right size for this particular carb…. But I can buy aluminium spinning’s and I can make up some mounting plates.



So getting back to the point. I spoke to the firm that produces the spinning’s and they are made of 1050 grade aluminium.



Now I have a lot of decent sized scrap bits of 6082 aluminium from work, will I be ok to weld 1050 to 6082? And if so would 4043 filler be ok?

No personal experience of this but I found this on the Aalco site:

Weldability

When welding 1050 to itself or an alloy from the same subgroup the recommended filler wire is 1100. For welding to alloys 5083 and 5086 or alloys from the 7XXX series, the recommend wire is 5356. For other alloys use 4043 filler wire.

I would get some practice in on aluminium before undertaking the job.

ok so sounds like 4043 will do the job!

and yeah need to get plenty of practice on aluminum first.... Still looking forward to trying it. Splashed out on a little CK torch to make things a little easier to control (I hope). The wp 26 torch that I have is an absolute pain for trying to keep a good angle when going around a radius.

I only mentioned it as it sounded like you were going straight in at it, the spun ally can be thin in places as spinning stretches it and thins it slightly.

I hadn't thought of the effects of spinning it making it thinner in places... Makes a lot of sense now you mention it.

still I'm sure it'll be another learning curve

Take it easy if the torch you have bought is an air cooled CK 9 size, as they dont like high amperages for too long, think the max rating is only something like 100amps AC???
