Right ok, think I get it. So by doing this it would give me the steel thread that I am after.

I guess it would be worth getting this done by someone with a kit, rather than buying seperate inserts and trying to match them up with an existing tap.

Yes, they're made out of stainless steel. The drills & taps are special sizes

You can buy helicoils, or there alternative brand in kits, Tang a couple of inserts and L/H tap, When iv used them which is rare much prefer to machine things, Iv bought these desposable type kits, I dont think they were much money.

Thanks snowcat. Think I've seen some of those recoil kits on eBay, just been a little weary of them. Also if I'm unsure of what size I need etc it could turn out to be rather expensive, especially if its a one off fix. Will look about some of the local places.

A good fastener stockholders should stock them...Iv used some M24s to bolt a hitch casting back onto a bulldozer that had striped Its threads there was little choice but to use inserts, I was suprised, as they held just fine despite the obvious abuse, So shouldnt be any problems on a little sump pan.

It's a RH tap (for a RH thread) you can't have a LH thread and a RH thread on the same coil!

My mistake years since I did that job, I know the kit came with all the stuff....

Actually Helicoils are stronger than stock threads. They form a wedge in the threads, the more pull on them the harder they wedge in.

The only issue is they don't seal well. Had one in an exhaust manifold and it leaked through the threads.

I seem to recall "oil plug repair kits" in auto parts stores here. It is a common problem (along with spark plugs.)

I'm about to put 16 of them in my ZX600 engine. The head was overtightened and pulled the studs out of the block.
