You won't get any current down the earth lead as the current flows between the output terminals of the secondary side of the transformer.

That is a tool tray welded to the top of my welder case is earthed and that was carried out with the welder it's welded to. The circuit that supplies the welder has all the RCD protection etc you could ever want
I don't think you are reading my posts - I'm saying it's fine and agree with what you say BUT there could be an issue if the welder is standing on an earthed welding table.
Gas will be great - make sure your bottles are isolated from the gas main though
