I'v seen this guy before, he has a lot of similar stuff on youtube, Goes under the name of Daves farm . He makes a living from the royalties paid by youtube based on the ammount of hits his video's get.

An engineer friend of mine knows of people that have welded fuel tanks up - they fill them right to the brim......

This, I think, is the 3rd thread we have on here about welding petrol tanks, the general consensus is that it's unsafe practice regardless of what a mate of a mate of a mate may have done.
With that in mind I'd like to say that we prefer to advocate safe working practices on here, after all, this site is primarily aimed at non-professionals who are looking for advice.

Considering the location of the hole in the tank - it must have been empty anyway, apart from a bit of vapour. He put some CO2 in the tank and presumably put the filler cap back on. All he got was a little flame. What he did was pretty stupid - especially working under the car held up as it was but I'd guess the risk of an explosion was quite low due to the CO2 in the tank.
His cameraman buddy would not have been so close if he thought there was any real risk. I call it an 'internet stunt' - designed to shock, looks riskier than it really is.
Still a pretty dumb thing to do.

Well put wozzaaah. The thought of someone seeing this thread then trying to weld a rusty old tank 'because they don't blow up, I've seen it done' scares the crap out of me!

The problem is if he blows a hole through the metal - letting the explosive vapours escape - then when he'd have continued to fill that hole he would have lit any escaped vapour igniting anything that is inside the tank as well.

I've seen some really nasty stuff happen from petrol. I refuse to allow anyone to weld near the tank as most tanks on modern cars are plastic - Melt the plastic fuel escapes releasing the vapours etc. Brimming the tank might work for any spark that happens on the inside but as soon as it starts leaking...

I totally agree that it is an unsafe practice and only a fool would attempt it. The professionals will only weld a fuel tank after it has been cleaned and soaked in a special liquid for a considerable time in order to remove any explosive vapours.

I posted it here in the 'general' forum as I could not believe what I was watching.

I also think as far as advice to the non professional, the comments on this thread about the whole thing and the pictures posted by Raw say it all.

What is shown in that video is suicidal & mad & not at all recommendable. He had far more luck then intelligence it seems. That is NOT safe, that is NOT the way to work on cars. Front towing eye is NOT designed to be loaded in such a direction, it is meant for towing, not side bend loads. As for the rest, somehow he got trough with that 1% or less chance of a tank not blowing up. However, that guy is going to kill himself if he keeps that up, it's only a matter of time then. Whoever watched that, please do not even THINK about doing something so dangerously stupid!
