I need to weld a patch panel to a rear wing/fender, it is about 1metre in length . Is it a good idea to joggle both joints and then But weld them together.The theory is that the both joggles will resist deformation and the channel that is formed is easily filled.Has anyone tried this?Also should i use weld through primer with my other lap joints.

I did this on a wing, folded the two edges so i was welding along a lip. I did it with a Rawlplug Battery powered stick welder. I filled the resulting V channel with lead.
Even so I'd weld a couple of cms, leave a gap, do another bit and so on, then weld inbetween the bits you've just done. Allow the metal to cool between welds.

I believe you are talking about flanging both edges in the same direction and butting the panels together with no overlap, so you'll have a shallow channel when you are finished. I have done this and it works nicely. I don't know if it does much to resist distortion, but it definitely reduces the amount of grinding needed to bring the weld level with the surface of the panels. That saves a lot of time, and probably makes a stronger joint if you're a rank amateur like myself. It also reduces the amount of filler required because you only need to fill the channel instead of a wide blend area to hide a bead that sits above the surface of the adjoining panels.

The best way to prevent distortion is to stitch weld it. Start at one end and weld one side for a few inches, then go to the other end and weld the opposite side from where you previously welded for a few inches. Then switch ends again but stay on the same side, then switch ends and sides. Keep this pattern up until you finish the weld. By welding on opposite ends and opposite sides, as the fender distorts it pushes against the parts already welded and the distortion resists itself. You can also try to offset the fender to prevent distortion, but this is very difficult unless you've had practice with it so I wouldn't recommend it.
