Welding a 2" pin

FJ, those old pivot pins make wonderful blanks for special tools if you have a lathe to turn them, if you were closer I'd be first in line for a few, no point in letting the scrap man have them....

Unless you can get a few shipped down to AFI's Brentwood Depot, then I'II get my mate who works there to bring them home for me....

I only have a few myself but what sizes would you be after? I doubt they would take any down as they dont like people making any kind of gain that they have lost out on (I was asked to take a damaged scissor pack as it was in the way but they wanted above scrap value for it!). I could probably get a few pins myself but would have to post them to you if thats any good?

Don't worry about trying to ship them down, its just a shame that a 50mm x 700mm bar is just throw in the scrap bin when it would be so useful in making special tools.

I do have a mate at the Brentwood depot, but its not worth the trouble of trying to get bits shipped down.

It always amazes me that management seem to think that something is worth a fortune if someone shows an interest in it.






When I worked at Nationwide Platforms they threw away thousands of pounds worth of brand new spares from our stores alone, because it didn't meet the requirements or wasn't on the approved/allowed list of TechEx, within a month of the skips leaving the yard we were re-ordering parts that we had had on the shelf to repair machines in the yard.

In one case they skipped parts that were under a bench (in an oily cardboard box and still waiting for a couple of parts on back order) for a machine that was being repaired in the workshop , because the big bosses were due on Monday so the depot management came in over the weekend "For that final push to get things ready for the inspection", skip went at 7.30am Monday morning and so did 3 grands worth of parts............

The workshop engineer in question walked into the service office, offered several choice words of advice to management, plus to leave his bench alone and told them to order THESE PARTS today.

Could have done with one of them hollow jacks a few times, nice bit of kit that.




We had a fairly big centrifugal fan bought in to us with a seized shaft a couple of years ago. 60mm shaft iirc, keywayed in and stainless.

Just and just managed to fit the fan in our press. Creaked a lot, and then started moving with a hell of a bang
Had to then cut the shaft off with a 9" every 20mm or so it could be pressed out a bit further each time.
Not much 250t won't move

I've just googled chesterfield college and that is 60miles from where I live. I don't go over that way but that's not to say I never will. I am actually back on site tomorrow doing another boom pin so will see what I can come away with and keep hold of them

Although I live in Essex, I quite often come up to Chesterfield to visit family so if you manage to acquire any scrap pins, I could always pop over one weekend if your available when I'm up...

Unfortunately its to far and you'll be travelling down around on the other side of London to Portsmouth, it'll have to be when I come up to Chesterfield, possibly in about 7 weeks time if that's ok with you.
