I went to America and discovered what it was like to be valued, respected and paid properly.
you shouldn’t have to work every scrap of overtime known to man to make decent wage as a skilled man, however you look at it. This country has a long way to go with regards to pay

There’s a long going idea that anyone can weld and that it’s not a real trade . Talk to most people and they will happily pay a chippy sparks or plumber double what the welder asks . Even in intustrial welder fitting brackets for a plumber will be on nearly double what the steel erector on the same sites on . There are company’s genuinely looking for good fabricator/welders and giving good money but they want all rounders not just mig monkeys .
how many can jump from welding cutting bending and fitting of mild stainless and alu . How many can do things the old manual ways now . Iv seem apprentices who loved the trade and wanted to learn go on to earn a proper living from it and the non caring young lads who believed once they could mig end up on barely above minimum welding trailers and other production type work .

I used to work overseas, a lot. All the skilled trades were UK tradesmen, money was good, especially in Chechnya for example, there was a lot of competition. trade tests were done in UK and only those that passed and had the personality, commitment and motivation were took on. Unless there is the motivation to become skilled and 'worthy', no-one will do it. We need another Falklands...

Really. A war. We not done enough of that already.

Or perhaps a decent vocational training program instead. Stop ditching kids that won't make A level or uni to sink or swim.

The Falklands had a galvanising effect on British Industry, a lot of the petty squabbles and industrial disputes were put to one side - even the bin-dippers got on side, we, as a nation did well from 'the war' in a step-change sense. It's the teachers that ditch the kids, not 'the system', they just can't be @rsed spending time with them when they can use the better performers to inflate their ego's and figures. I do agree that A levels & Uni should not be seen as the only stream to a decent career. When I came back to UK I took a job as a site manager of a large school (just to pay the bills whilst I worked out what I wanted to do) to a man person, the teachers were only interested in themselves and their own worth, the teaching assistants, technicians etc. were the only ones that gave a stuff about the pupils. I didn't stay long. To have a decent vocational training programme, there needs to be an end goal, not just passing the course.

You're talking out of where the sun don't shine mate. Do you personally know any teachers. My partner was a business studies teacher. Ofsted put so much pressure on them to perform. That she ended up having two strokes that nearly ended her life. And to suggest 'we need another Falklands' is frankly laughable.

Very interesting and mostly valid points of view guys.
I looked at welding jobs online and to be honest out of 400 od welder jobs the wage went from £9 to £13 an hour and some companies wanted in date coding for the lower rate the cheeky buggers. Temp work was better but the reality is people take what they can get locally and it's generally crap. I was getting £12 back in the 90s so I think the pay should be a lot higher.

and by what assumption do you base that on? Maybe, Just maybe, she really cared about the kids she taught and pushed herself too hard in trying to get them to reach their full potential. I know you said that you worked 'with over 30 teachers' But how many of them did you actually get to KNOW? By your arrogant sounding attitude, non. You just made an assumption.

I’m here because to uproot my life , house, partner and dogs to move to the other side of the world just so I can get paid properly doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense.
Remember how to be British. Which bit are you hoping for? Not sure you remember much about the falklands era, maybe you’re hoping for another round of thatchers layoffs, closing of industries and tradesmen moving to Germany to have any chance of finding work? Maybe workers going on strike every 10 minutes?
