Actually started at £4 a week and payed £3 for digs £ 1 didn't go far even in '65 . Still managed to ride a M/C usually without Tax but always with insurance.

When I first started work I had to pay my mum £7 a week board, which was half of my pay.
My sister was on the dole, getting a quid a week more than me, and she only had to pay a fiver board, 'because she has more time on her hands' was the reason.

Mother said if I saved a £1 of my £2.10 shillings pw I did not pay keep a good deal by the time I had finished being an apprentice and improver I bought a cheap house saved ever since it's a habit

I don't remember anyone saying they were the GOOD old days. In 60 years time todays teenagers will be moaning that they were hard done by as they had to make do with an iphone 93 or X box132 or some such and as for the price of Hair gel . Don't forget that nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Gone are the days when an apprentice or improver was grateful of the chance to learn a trade irrespective of the wage, all seem to be more focused/interested in comparing wage slips with mates in dead end jobs. Nobody seems to care or want to know how expensive it is to bring on a youngster to a point where they may start to show a return on investment. Its no surprise industry is lacking in new blood, its a race to the bottom.

The only thing I rebelled against during my apprenticeship was being put on the capstan to make widgets. I reckoned I was there to learn and not be cheap labour. I set the m/c up and made 10 for inspection and then another 100 all OK the order was a few 1000 . after a few minutes I pulled both levers and broke the tooling. The foreman grabbed me by the temple hair and told me I would never make a capstan operator as long as I had a hole in my a*** ,(quote) With that he marched me to a nearly new Hardinge center lathes and said I was to turn anything ,one offs, that was required. Pure Bliss.

Been saying that for years Bob, got to be watched and pointed in right direction they may be keen but dont know or understand the cost of a mistake +the time of the trainer
Had a lad start for us who told me that brushing up was not what he was there to do, both the foreman and I brushed up, he did not last

I was tea boy, sweeper upper, sewage clearer ,car cleaner, petrol pump attendant (only for 1 hour a day ) and parts collector on a bush bike all over town , regularly carried 2 full classic Mini exhaust systems over my shoulder . The bike parts collection stopped when I had just got back to the workshop before the heavens opened and one of the mechanics had forgotten something and wanted me to go back out. I refused due to the weather and ended up being sent home by the foreman . Next day ended up in the managers office who saw things from my point of view. The week after I was having driving lesson on the company , it didn’t stop the parts collecting but at least I did it in a pick up truck

I found that when I left school, some of my mates went into unskilled, labouring jobs and were on better money than me on my first year apprentices wage, but four years later I was on skilled rates which was higher than theirs

My first job in 1986 was a YTS mechanic for the Ambulance service, £27.30 per week, funny how you remember your first pay, it cost about £4 to fill my 50cc bike, gave my mum £10 dig money and I still had a few quid spare at the end of the week, the spare money at the end of the week all changed when I got my first car though.

I used to drink Doombar for £2.00 a pint at the Springvale Tavern when I lived in Sheffield. Last week I was out in Shoreditch and paid £14.50 for two pints (Not Doombar mind, but still not bloody worth it)

Never mind shoreditch, Dublin is the place to overpay for a drink!

Admittedly they're euros, so it looks about 15% worse, but still.

Like always, some will, some don't.

We've had, and have at the moment, some lads, and lasses, who will go far - willing to work, willing to listen, willing to put their point, willing to learn.

Now, as a company, we seem to have cocked up in making the best use of them sometimes . . . other companies haven't been slow to capitalise on that, which has annoyed those of us warning management they are going to go/be taken.

And we've had, and have at the moment, some who can't make it there on time, can't make it all, but can make every wash up time, every break, every home time, every chance for a chat and a coffee, bang on time. If they stay, they will be complaining about being on the base rate, never increasing their grade . . .

Turning up and keen is a start, looking for a job when young most employers know each other what makes people think they don't talk.
You don't turn up on time, no interest (jobs boring) pay lo.
So maybe the next employer sees that as a negative his job could be the one you really want, but you don't turn up on time not interested why bother to give you a start.

I spent months at a time on capstans, making the same repetitive soul destroying widgets. It was mind numbingly boring and I hated it. That was in the late 70's and there wasn't much other work about in my area, so I laboured on with my apprenticeship, basically being slave labour.

The years rolled by and I finally got my C&G certificates and all that, but by then I'd progressed onto using all the other kit in the machine shop, usually on similarly mind numbing repetition. Eventually I was the only person in the shop who could competently set up and operate every machine, lathes, capstans, milling machines, radial arm drills, shapers etc etc. Then the company went under....

I walked straight into another job the same week.

not sure on the exact year, it'll have been some time in the 60's.... my mam was on £13 a week but if anyone asked she lied and said less because no-one thought a woman could earn that much :-o


didn't plan it or do it on purpose but I have mostly philipino employees now... and it's better than ever, good honest hard working guys


just sacked a (English) lad a couple of weeks back for constantly not turning in, he'd had too many warnings already.... the girl he was shacking up with is a customer, she was in earlier and one of the guys here asked about him... she's chased him because money was going missing out of her house..... if he was robbing her can only assume he was robbing me too :-(
