What's plater?
Two meaningsWhat's plater?
the travesty is platers being paid £12 an hour and welders the same.
The idea is your welders were bloody quick, piece work used to quickly weed out people who **Language**ed about because they made less money at the end of the week.
Platers just tacked up, their skill is in setting out and fabricating.
Traditionally on more money than just welders as the platers can weld as well but the unions made sure they stuck to their role, it stopped companies taking the ****.
Fabricator is a catch all for someone who fills a variety of rolls, and they can pay a minuscule wage.
I've seen adverts wanting fabricators to TIG/MIG & Stick weld, fabricate, run piece work on pressbrake to exacting tolerances, roll, shear, mill and turn. For £14 an hour.
I'm sorry but if you can do all those things to a good standard, you should be on multi skilled rate at £18+ an hour.
Like fitters, carrying out multiple roles.
The term 'engineer' in the UK has been used and abused by lots of people. In Germany, a certain standard (and qualifications) have to be met before you can be called one.
Hnc minimumI did a five year apprenticeship as a ‘Fitter and Turner’ and I’ve got an ONC , bear in mind this was the sixties. I guess the ONC would be a BTech now? But I wouldn’t call myself an engineer, I’ve always thought that Engineer implied a degree or similar qualification.
I believe that who does engine management mapping is on another level in this sectorPaint sprayers in the motortrade also suffer with this as well....![]()
Tell them it’s just 0’s and 1’sI believe that who does engine management mapping is on another level in this sector
When a doctor or a nurse that can’t count a dose right it’s how it is but a engineer goes to prison if they mess upEngineer is a professional qualification like Doctor, solicitor, barrister, architect etc
But it in the Uk it is not a protected designation sadly.
Anyone with a toolbox can call themselves an engineer
As a very good engineer friend of mine says:
“What’s the difference between an engineer and a technician ?
Maths !
The thing is when those other professions get things wrong, generally it only has financial implications and consequences (dr might kill a person, granted)
When engineers get things wrong, lots of people die
Trains derail, aircraft fall out of the sky, bridges or buildings collapse, power plants explode
The stuff we put our name to and designs we sign off on, kill people if we don’t get it right.
That’s what people don’t appreciate, and it’s a travesty that “Engineer” is not a protected term.
