Welder voltage/amperage setup done (semi)automatically?

First of all apologies for any technical mistakes in what I'm writing - I'm a layman... Nevertheless I'm looking for information about whether it's possible to simplify welding machine configuration. I've heard about Mid-east shipyards using a tool (voltage/amperage meter? size of a mobile phone) that allows to automatically detect the proper welding machine configuration based on material used. Is there such a thing? Would it automatically configure the welder or just detect the required settings? Or is it simply... not true?

never heard of that. There are machines called synergic machines that you enter the material data into and it will set everything for you. Not heard of anything like a multimeter that determines your settings though

I haven't looked for one but I can imagine there may be a phone app that gives you suggested settings for a particular welder based on the material spec you put in but you would obviously need to make the setting changes yourself
