Once you've built up a good rep you can charge very good money for it. But I think you need to get a few through the door and trained so that they can push the word out and do your advertising for you. cos as you know welders are very very competitive guys and if one has had a lump of training and experience over another that simply won't do. You'll know this better than I do with the pipe boys a cap is a way of signing off the canvas and if you can get a few signing off there canvases the others will be along.
With regards to pricing I would say @Rrunnach is the best guide for that. This is what he does.

It's good when real welders turn to trainers. Training is however an art in itself, I should look into learning the skills well in advance of kick off.

Have took a few guys under my wing in the past its realy satisfying when some one is strugling a bit snd you can show them snd give them a bit of confidence then see them coming on thats what its all sbout

I dont know if 1 to 1 is using your time efficiently. balancing enough but not too much information, and the time needed alone to put it into practice, i would think you could keep 2 or 3 welders just as well schooled as 1.
Consequently would greatly reduce fee to student and greatly increase the rate of word of mouth spread.

Sorry, out and about with MoHo, signal is nada in many areas. Prior to working full time within FE, I would run training courses, mainly within client workplace, was a long time ago and, price variod depending on numbers.

Anyone setting up would require to meet awarding body criteria for training and assessing. In some cases,if. One is doing the training, he/she cannot assess, which means two persons required.

I would suggest ZB does a lot of homework prior to going down this route.

@zeppelin builder it's a tough old game bud but thoroughly worth it. I currently work for a small training provider in England teaching welding and agree if you have the skills it's great to pass them on. If you are going down the NVQ route or new standards you'd need OFSTED approval to do so. If you are I'd advise getting them in from the onset to help you plan and prepare. You'll need a teaching qualification to do this also such as Cert Ed and A1/V1. If you are going down just industrial training plus coding then it's a bit easier. If you want guys to get coded through you then it can be a mine field as all the big names in the business will want a cut (dare not mention them as we have had the same issues) but you can get your CSWIP 3.1 level 2 weld inspectors ticket and use a third party to send the welds off to be coded. Ye seen some of the one on one fees over here anyway in region of €50-60 and hour which imo ridiculous if someone needs a good few hours help.I appreciate knowledge is key and materials etc so think managing 2-3 students would be a good allrounder

We only teach groups of 12 maximum. When I was at the college teaching it started out with groups of 10 but in the last 2 years i was there we were teaching 25! There is no way you can teach efficiently and safely with group sizes that large. It's not fair on the staff or students. The quality slipped so badly that enough was enough. When this company contacted me to work for them it was a no brainer. Teach less students for more money and the main focus is on quality of learning. Happy me

Agree for sure 10 to 1 is ridiculous if paying our good money, good efficient training should be received.Half that amount or so would be great.I was in a class of 15-24 (2 trainers)people(differed day to day)out of a 7 hour day I got about 30 mins one on one time a different stages throughout the day.I learned jsut enough to get me started but within the first week of starting work my boss allocated 3 people to keep eye on me all day.with so much time then spent on me I learned more in the first week there than the 16 weeks training. This was due to the ratio of Trainers/experienced welders to trainee/apprentice(me)

I have 15 bays, which is heavy going if all are in use with apprentices. Same goes for evening, but folks attending are more mature and laid back. I'm treading water now, hopefully out by this time next year, or at least on reduced days???

Good evening gents.
I have done training twice and the ratio was about 10:1. In my opinion that was too many, however it depended on the quality of the training. 1st time round doing tig, one of the trainers had been doing this for about 30 years and he was good. If the weld was sh%t he told you so and pointed out how to fix it. Second time round the trainer I liked had retired (gone full time as a welding inspector) and his second in charge took over. Great guy, very polite, encouraging, but I at least wasn't there to get hot air blown up my a#$e. In the end failed the test due to lack of sidewall fusion on rotated pipe. Weld looked great but no (insufficient) side wall fusion. I had put in much more time into this at my workshop than at the training place and had the new assistant out to help me short my techniques to no avail in the end. At the end I put in extra evenings at the training place to get it down pat for the test and was told 'it's all good' you got it nailed, in the end wasn't so. I am now going through the now welding inspector for my certification and he gives me pointers on how to get it right. He is very diplomatic regarding the direction the training facility has gone, but you can read between the lines it is the reason he had left.
What I am trying to say I wanted more one on one time and that wasn't possible at that place, however (in my opinion) the caliber of the instructor is vital and the confidence he instills. It was supposed to be an 18 week course. At week 16, you can try this or that dosn't cut it, you should have it nailed before then. For an employee the cost was about 1 months wages, so was significant not to mention the time, so if you are doing one of these you do want a result in the end. Any way just my rant, good training is hard to find and you don't really know how good the training is till about half way through by the results you are getting and your individual progress.

used to be a bit of a joke in the trade calling inspectors at college,s( failed welders) guys who couldnt cut it in the industry ,of course there was the odd good guy and it was say 30 years ago a doddle of a job ,they had a great sideline making or i should say the students making gates ,benches and all sorts of fabrications that were ushered quietly out the back doors ,could order material with no real budget to follow
fast forward into computer age then its more paperwork than training trying to balance department budgets do same job with less money ,eventuly the good guys say stuff this and leave for a better paid job with less hassle .ok now we arrive at the situation where we get guys falling in from other departments,maybe done a bit of car /maintenance/fitter types reading a bit of paper and trying to show young lads how to weld to get them a pass on that nvq task ive seen it ,the young lads who are shown at work are miles ahead of the others and sometimes the instructors ,does pay peanuts get monkeys sound familiar

i have thought about doing a few of the most used procedures in my own name/company no i dont want /need a teaching degree i would have a small unit where i would offer specialist training to qualify to industry recognised specs to the approved procedures ,i could bring in the relevant insurance surveyor to witness tests
might have to be iso 9001 approved this is where it gets sticky /expensive

perhaps it could be done as a mobile service too where i supply gear and knowledge

Have a look at JT Glasgow outfit, to me, they would be your biggest competition, as they have been around for decades. A quick google comes up with other outfits, too.

That said, though, this does not mean you can not be successful through time.

My hat off to you for giving it a go. Good training is hard to find and those people that are serious will very much appreciate it. Some trainers that are training talk about how to weld but in reality cannot produce what they are teaching, which is a real concern. As we all know welding in itself is not that hard, but getting it right and to code is something else. The difficulty that you may have is the 'awareness' of the 'to be trained' out there knowing about you. As the now welding inspector here, if he was running a training program and I found out about it, I would be in, in an instance. However if no one let me know I would be none the wiser.
In your case ' who you know' is just as important as 'what you know'.
