Welder Training - Insurance Required?

Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of doing the odd bit of welder training, much like Richard does, 1:1, but with MIG & MMA too for people starting out or needing a hand with certain aspects?

What sort of insurance would be required for such training? Public Liability or something a bit more tailored?

I can't advise from experience but the following question comes to mind.

How would it be different from training an apprentice or new staff member?
Is there already something to cover that in your business insurance ?

I do it from a very casual point of view 1 a month roughly. I cover the initial costs of the session and a few pints.
If your thinking of doing it more often from a professional POV it may be in your interest to get qualified to train. and afaik from an insurance POV public liability would be all you need.

I don't think it will be on a large enough scale to require a formal qualification like CSWIP Welding Instructor - plus that will no doubt cost thousands just like all the other TWI courses.

If I remember correctly it is quite involved requiring 6G welds in pipe in three processes.

Insurance is a strange and complex area. I would ring an insurance broker and enquire. Or if you pm me the details I shall ask my little sister for you, as she is a speacilist buisness insurance broker.

CSWIP Welding Instructor - plus that will no doubt cost thousands

I did this and it’s completely useless in regards to training someone to weld. It’s aimed specifically at training people to understand fusion welding defects.
I’m thinking more along the lines of a qualification in welding instruction. Obviously you’d have to justify the spend of the course with the clientele which I couldn’t do. Imo You’d be great at it. You’ve got great interaction skills and can make the content personal to the individual which is absolute key to it. A great welder isn’t a great teacher (good job really or I’d be hopeless) but a great teacher can make someone a great welder.

Frankly your in a different ballpark to Richard as your officially running a buisness.

Its far more of a minefield, like letting clients into your shop only with acess to the tools to boot.

Most who do it take cash I suppose and take the risks

Doubt there's much to be gained financially but its got its own satisfaction.

For me it’s about having fun, meeting fellow members (I only offer it to forum members) and helping people out.
Sure some cash exchanges hands as it costs me to do it and I give up my own time but it’s never gonna or intended to make me a living. I have a full time job for that.

According to my MRS to teach adults your supposed to now have some teaching qualification, she seems to think its further education teaching certificate.

Then again as a buisness growth opportunity training its self is big buisness now, an industry in its self.

Nope and I used to teach lots of adults For a course to be officially recognised is another matter.

Pretty sure the paragliding metal artist was getting disclaimers off courses at one time.
You can't sign away you legal rights in British law though.
I let select persons into my place and am allowed in others same terms but it's a trust thing only
