Hi everyone,
Apart from a tiny bit of what I thought was welding but now know was actually brazing at school about 25 years ago I've never done any welding. I've, perhaps unwisely, decided to build myself a CNC machine which means that I need to put together a sturdy steel frame for it to run on.
The frame will be built from mild steel box section with the main load carrying parts made from 50x50x4mm box and the bed from 50x25x3mm with some 20x20x2mm bracing.
I've read most of the MIG tutorial and some of the TIG and Arc tutorials and I think what I want is a 150Amp or more MIG welder (something like the GYS SmartMIG 162 for example).
I want a machine that can run both gas and gas-less but I can't make up my mind whether to try and get / use gas for my first attempt. I think it will be one of those machines that comes out the cupboard just once in a while so gas-less seems like a sensible choice but I'm concerned it will really hamper my learning to weld. It's probably worth mentioning that I'll have to weld outside exclusively as I have nowhere inside that wouldn't catch fire
.
What sort of price would I expect to be paying for a cylinder of CO2? Can you rent them for short periods so that I don't have to have it hanging around the house?
Any thoughts, recommendations etc would be great. Cheers
P.S. Once upon a time I was a chemist and we used nitrogen to shield experiments and keep out oxygen due to it's low reactivity. I've been wondering how come it's not used as a shield gas for welding? Welding temperatures would produce some nitrogen oxides but not enough for that to be a problem I would have thought.
